The story of Beloved starts with a lady named Sethe who lives with her daughter Denver in a haunted house. The Black community lives near the house and they believe that the house is haunted.
Sethe is outcasted by her own community as she has a past that people do not like.
Story from the Past:
- Sethe was a slave 18 years ago. She used to live in a house as a slave where a person named a school teacher and his nephews makes her life hell. She made a plan to run away with her husband from that place.
- Sethe husband disappears and she runs away from that place alone. Sethe is pregnant and she also had three children. On her way, she gives birth to a daughter. A white woman named Amy Denver delivered Sethe’ baby. She named her daughter on the name of that white lady, Denver.
- Sethe starts living with her four children but one day, her old owner School teacher catches her. Sethe kills her one daughter and she wants to kill the other children too. She does not want them to be slaves like her. The school teacher and his nephews think that Sethe has done mad.
- They leave her alone and Sethe starts living with her other children. Sethe mother in law also lives with her, her name is Baby Suggs.
- Sethe dead daughter’s ghost is wandering in the house. Sethe has two sons Howard and Buglar who run away in fear of ghosts. Sethe mother in law is also dead. Sethe with her daughter Denver lives in that house.
- Denver is now 18 years now and she is frightened to live alone in that house named Sweet Home.
Present:
- Paul D who was also a slave just like Sethe comes in Sweet home. His past was also horrified like Sethe. He is also a free man now after the end of the Civil War.
- Paul starts living with them and fell in love with Sethe. One day, a girl comes into the house whose name is Beloved. This is the ghost of that girl child who was dead and now she comes back after eighteenth years.
- Beloved and Denver become friends and they do not like Paul D because he flirts with their mother. Beloved asks questions from Sethe about her past and she tries to separate Paul D and Sethe.
- After knowing the truth Paul D leaves the house that Sethe has killed her daughter 18 years ago. Sethe comes to know that Beloved is her own daughter and she apologizes to her but Beloved does not forgive her.
- Beloved is getting stronger day by day. Black women come to her house to make the ghost away and Sethe feels broken after this and loses her senses.
- Paul D comes back in the life of Sethe and they all start living together.
